Penn State Ends Season with Rose Bowl Loss Jan 02, 2009 PASADENA, Calif. (AP) -- Southern California made a strong case of its own to be No. 1. JoePa certainly recognized what a talented team the Trojans were — and that was before they beat up Penn State in the Rose Bowl. Mark Sanchez passed for 413 yards and four touchdowns, USC dominated on defense and the fifth-ranked Trojans defeated the No. 6 Nittany Lions 38-24 Thursday. Penn State coach Joe Paterno watched from the press box, where he's been for most of the season because of hip problems. He couldn't have liked what he saw — at one point in the first half, the TV camera caught him shaking his head as USC (12-1) rolled to a 31-7 lead. Out of the BCS championship mix, the Trojans could only wonder what might have been had they not lost at Oregon State 27-21 on Sept. 25. What was thought to be a weak Pac-10 hurt the Trojans' chances to reach the national championship game in Miami — where Florida and Oklahoma will play next week. But the Pac-10 finished the postseason 5-0. "With all due respect, those are two great programs, I don't think anybody can beat the Trojans," USC coach Pete Carroll said. "I just think we can beat anyone we played. That's happened a lot to us late in the season. This is a terrific finishing program. There are so many things we can do. We're just hard to beat right now. "I just wish we could keep playing. Unfortunately, we don't get to. Maybe someday there will be a chance, but not now." And not soon, either. There's no playoff in sight for major college football. USC scored four touchdowns and a field goal on five consecutive first-half possessions for its 24-point halftime lead against a team that allowed only 12.4 points per game during the regular season. With the No. 1 defense in the nation, there was no way the Trojans would blow that kind of lead. The Trojans' 31 first-half points were the most they've scored in any of their record 33 Rose Bowl games. They spent most of the second half working the clock while their defense held Penn State in check until the fourth quarter. "The offense was on fire in the first half," Carroll said. "I thought Mark just set the tempo, (wide receiver) Damian Williams came through and the whole line really protected well so we had a chance to really get moving on these guys. We just kept firing on all cylinders, the defense kept giving them the ball back, and the guys just took advantage of it." The Nittany Lions (11-2) scored 17 points in the fourth quarter to make the final score respectable, but fell far short of their 40.2-point average. "I don't want to take anything away from Southern Cal, because they played a heck of a football game and their quarterback played a great game," Paterno said. "They certainly deserved to win it, but I'm a little disappointed that we weren't a little bit more competitive. And a lot of that was because we made so many mistakes in the first half." USC finished with 27 first downs and 474 yards of total offense. Penn State gained 410 yards, almost twice the average the Trojans allowed during the regular season. But it hardly mattered. Paterno, whose won 383 games, including 23 bowls — both records — said several times in the days leading up to the Rose Bowl that he thought USC was at least as good as any team in the country, perhaps better. Clearly, the 82-year-old coach knew what he was talking about. The Trojans won 10 straight after losing to Oregon State, outscoring the opposition 380-80. "I thought that we were playing against the best and I thought we had to play our best to be competitive," Paterno said. "In the first half, we just did the dumb things that we have not done all year. We didn't play our game in the first half, but we came back and we hung in there. So we have nothing to be ashamed of." The Nittany Lions committed three turnovers and nine penalties for 72 yards. Sanchez, who completed 28-of-35 passes without being intercepted and finished the season with 3,207 passing yards and 34 touchdown throws, might have played his final game for USC. The strong-armed junior has said he will consider making himself available for the NFL draft. The deadline is Jan. 15. Sanchez became the third player to pass for more than 400 yards in the Rose Bowl. Afterward, many in the crowd of 93,293 chanted: "One more year, one more year" to Sanchez. "That was special," he said. "We'll go through it and really take our time doing it," Carroll said. "This should not be an emotional decision." Williams caught a career-high 10 passes for 162 yards and a touchdown and Ronald Johnson caught two TD passes. Penn State's Daryll Clark completed 21-of-36 passes for 273 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions. Evan Royster, who averaged 6.5 yards per carry in gaining 1,202 yards during the regular season, came out with an injured left knee in the first quarter after picking up 34 yards on six carries. Carroll's Trojans have won seven straight conference championships and played in seven consecutive BCS bowls — both records. They're 6-1 in big games — 5-0 against Big Ten teams such as Penn State — and 82-9 since Carroll's second year on the job, 2002. They've also won 11 or more games in seven straight seasons — another record. The Trojans have played in a record-tying four straight Rose Bowls, winning three straight since losing to Texas 41-38 with the national title on the line. Sanchez was the offensive player of the game and Kaluka Maiava was the top defensive player, becoming the third straight USC linebacker to win that award, following Brian Cushing and Rey Maualuga. It became clear in the first quarter that Penn State's usually dominant defense was vulnerable. Sanchez threw a 27-yard scoring pass to Williams, capping an 86-yard drive that appeared to be short-circuited early on when Aaron Maybin sacked Sanchez and forced a fumble that Ollie Ogbu recovered at the USC 34. But Maybin, who had 12 sacks during the regular season, was offside. The Nittany Lions, who were 9 1/2-point underdogs, tied it on a 9-yard run by Clark, capping an 80-yard, nine-play drive. Maybe the Big Ten would finally hang in there against USC. Nope. Sanchez scored on a 6-yard quarterback draw, completing an 80-yard drive that put USC on top for good. David Buehler's 30-yard field goal made it 17-7, and Sanchez threw scoring passes of 19 yards to Johnson and 20 yards to C.J. Gable in a 48-second span late in the second period for USC's 24-point halftime lead. Clark threw a 2-yard touchdown pass to Derrick Williams early in the fourth quarter, capping an 80-yard drive and trimming USC's lead to 31-14. The Trojans wasted no time in answering, going 82 yards on three plays, the last one a 45-yard scoring pass from Sanchez to a wide-open Johnson with 12:02 left. If there was going to be any drama on a typically clear and mild evening in Pasadena, that ended it. Ian Keserich left the rebound from Snider's first shot atop the crease and the Royals' forward cashed in. Johnstown showed great poise, though, by killing off two Reading power play after the initial goal, and then coming back with a power play goal of its own. Greg Gallagher used a screen in front of Michael Ouzas to get a wrist shot in from the left point for his second goal of the season. Wes Clark and Mike Bartlett assisted on the goal at 12:33. Andy Contois gave Johnstown a 2-1 lead with a wrist shot from the left wing that deflected in off of Ouzas' glove at 17:56. Jarrett Konkle, skating in his first game with Johnstown, earned an assist. Defense was the word of the second period as neither team could put a shot past the goaltenders. Reading did manage 13 shots in the middle frame, aided by three power play chances, meanwhile Johnstown launched nine shots on Ouzas. Tempers flared at the end of the second as Mike Knight tried to square off with Kyle Hagel with 1:19 left in the second, and Trevor Hendrikx wanted to go with Dinos Stamoulis after the period had ended. Each time, though, the linesmen interceded before the combatants could go at it. The Chiefs and Royals traded two goals each in the third period, which worked out in Johnstown's favor. Contois' second of the game made it 3-1 after 4:56, but Mac Faulkner got it back within one at 12:34. Konkle, already with two assists scored the Chiefs' second power play goal of the game, and eventual game winner, at 17:04. It became the game winner because Faulkner added a power play goal for Reading with seven seconds left in regulation to set the final. Ian Keserich won his second straight start at the Sovereign Center by making 35 saves, while the Chiefs' power play ended the night 2-for-6. The Chiefs are back on home ice Wednesday, December 31st at 6:00 pm when they host the Trenton Devils. Pitt had all five scorers tally double figure points, including 26 from senior guard Shavonte Zellous (Orlando, Fla./Jones), and the team contributed a school record-tying 12 blocks in the win. Also scoring in double figures were Taneisha Harrison with 17, Shayla Scott and Xenia Stewart with 12 and Pepper Wilson with 10. Scott (Monroeville, Pa./Gateway) added eight rebounds and Stewart (Bowie, Md./Riverdale Baptist) added six rebounds and six assists. Pitt out-rebounded the Seahawks 59 to 28 and forced 26 turnovers. The Panthers yet again shut down the opposing team’s leading scorer as Wagner’s Andrea Reed scored just six points on the night. Pitt led 46-23 at the half, but pulled away in the second, outscoring Wagner 52-18 in the second half for the 57-point victory. The Panthers will now travel to the state of Florida for games at Florida A&M on Friday, Dec. 19 at 7 p.m. and at Florida Sunday, Dec. 21 at 2 p.m. Steelers Grace Cove Of Sports SI Dec 17, 2008 Pittsburgh and Baltimore, the best defenses of the decade, met to decide the AFC North—and to settle the debate over which unit can claim to be the NFL's best. The answer is etched in steel, and linebacker LaMarr Woodley, a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ defense, appears on the cover of the December 22, 2008, issue of Sports Illustrated, with the billing, STEEL CURTAIN II -DEFENSE - That Same Old December Song in the NFL. In this week’s cover story titled D As in Dominant, SI senior writer Jim Trotter says of the game and the defenses: “Sunday’s battle provided everything one would expect from the NFL's top-ranked defenses, with offensive advances seemingly measured in inches rather than yards…. As the Steelers walked to the locker room afterward, one member of the defense barked, ‘Fourteen games in a row! Fourteen games in row! There shouldn't be no debate now!’ What he meant was, the 11–3 Steelers, who entered the game with the league's No. 1 defense, have held their opponents to less than 300 yards of total offense in every game this season, tying the postmerger record set by the Los Angeles Rams in 1973; and any talk that the Ravens’ No. 2-ranked defense is the better unit should cease” (page 34). Trotter adds: “Despite the hostile nature of the rivalry, there is a mutual respect between the two units, and they are more alike than players on either side care to admit.” The masterminds behind the two defenses are coordinators Dick LeBeau (Steelers) and Rex Ryan (Ravens). Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin praises LeBeau: “Dick is the epitome of a team player. He has no ego. He just wants to win. If I had come in and tried to change the defense, it would have been about ego. But we all have to check our egos at the door. I’ve worked with guys like Tony Dungy and Monte Kiffin, and I viewed working with Dick as another opportunity to work with a brilliant defensive mind. Every day he’s tinkering, trying to figure out how to do something better. He comes to work with an emphasis on getting better every day.” Continuing on Rex Ryan [son of Buddy], Trotter says: “[Ryan] has tweaked the D to his liking, making it even more unpredictable and aggressive. He seemingly comes up with new pressure packages in his sleep, but one thing he refuses to change is what he looks for in a player.” Ryan says: “It’s not necessarily the position, it’s the disposition. You’ve got to have the right guys, the right mentality, to have consistency. Every now and then you get a flash-in-the-pan team that shows up and has a decent year on defense. But for the most part it’s usually us and Pittsburgh right there with each other, and I think it has a lot to do with the type of players we have—and the mind-set of those players. There’s a passion that both teams play with on defense.” Pitt Prepares For Final Home Game Dec 16, 2008 The 16th-ranked Pitt women’s basketball team (7-1) will host Wagner Tuesday at 7 p.m. at the Petersen Events Center for the Panthers’ final home game before the holiday break. Pitt has now won seven consecutive games and will be looking to improve their all-time record against the Seahawks to 2-0. Last season, Pitt defeated Wagner 85-41 in Long Island in the only meeting between the teams. Guard Taneisha Harrison (Bowie, Md./St. John’s College) had her career-high against Wagner last season with 23 points in just 21 minutes off the bench. Wagner enters the game with a 3-4 record and are coached by 15th-year head coach Gela Mikalauskas. Guard Andrea Reed leads the team in scoring with 13.7 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. Lozinak. The sale of the club is pending approval from the Eastern League and Minor League Baseball, and review by the Baseball Office of the Commissioner. The Lozinak family was the original owner of the Curve franchise, together with the late Tate DeWeese, when the club began play in 1999. The Lozinaks owned the team through the 2001 season before reaching an agreement to sell the franchise to the group led by Greenberg in October 2001. Curve Baseball LP will maintain its ownership of the Short-Season Class-A New York-Penn League's State College Spikes. "Today's announcement marks a bittersweet day for our ownership group and management team because we have thoroughly enjoyed all of the hard work of building the Altoona Curve into one of the most innovative and well-respected franchises in the country, while enhancing the wonderful fan experience here at beautiful Blair County Ballpark," said Greenberg. "We have forged so many personal bonds and friendships that we know will last forever. Yet while it is difficult to let go of this wonderful franchise, we are thrilled to be returning the Curve to Bob Lozinak, who had never intended to part with it in the first place." Greenberg added, "We were not actively looking to sell the franchise, and truthfully, the only person we would have considered an offer from was Bob Lozinak. To the legions of Altoona Curve fans, who are the true foundation for this franchise's extraordinary success and accomplishments, this announcement is a wonderful development because ownership of the team is returning to the man who, more than a decade ago, had the vision and commitment to bring Minor League Baseball to his hometown." Greenberg also announced today the formation of his new company, Greenberg Sports Group (GSG), which will provide management, consulting and marketing services to the sports industry across the country. GSG will manage the overall operations of both the State College Spikes and Class-A Advanced Myrtle Beach (SC) Pelicans. As part of the sale of the Curve to the Lozinak family, GSG will provide consulting services to the Curve for a period of three years following the sale. Curve General Manager Todd Parnell will head the management team at Greenberg Sports Group, which will include State College Spikes General Manager Rick Janac. Curve Associate General Manager Jeff Garner and Chief Financial Officer John Donley will each relinquish their positions to join Greenberg Sports Group once the sale receives all requisite baseball approvals. "The bond between the Curve franchise and the residents of Altoona and Central Pennsylvania is a special one and I'm proud to have been a part of it for the past seven years and to have made so many special friendships here," said Parnell. "What our ownership group and management team has accomplished over the past seven seasons is remarkable and can't be duplicated by many other teams and fan bases across the country. We all wish nothing but the best to the Lozinaks in building upon the Curve's legacy, which they played such a central role in establishing." "This is certainly a great opportunity to be back in baseball and what better place than Altoona, our original Field of Dreams," said Bob Lozinak. "We are very appreciative of the outstanding accomplishments of Chuck and his group and look forward to providing great family entertainment to the best fans in Minor League Baseball." David Lozinak will take over as the Curve's Chief Operating Officer once the agreement is formally approved. An announcement regarding a new General Manager will be made at a later date. Red Flash Win Over Youngstown State Dec 01, 2008 Junior Mislav Jukic (Zagreb, Croatia / Life Center Academy) recorded his first career double-double to lead four Saint Francis players in double-digit scoring as the Red Flash men’s basketball team defeated Youngstown State 66-65 on Saturday night at the Beeghly Center. SFU snapped a six-game road losing streak by shooting a season-best 51.0 percent from the field. The Red Flash improved to 2-4 on the year, and will look to carry the momentum of their first road win of the season into a 7 p.m. Monday contest at Morgan State. Jukic made 7-of-12 field goal attempts for 15 points and a career-high 11 rebounds to go with one block. Senior Grant Surprenant (Palatine, Ill. / Palatine) had his best shooting performance of the season in going 5-of-8 from the field, 4-of-6 from long distance, for a season-high 14 points. Senior Marquis Ford (St. Petersburg, Fla. / St. Petersburg) had 12 points, 3 rebounds and 3 assists, and was 5-of-7 from the field, and junior Devin Sweetney (Washington, D.C. / Riverdale Baptist) had 11 points and 4 rebounds in also draining 5-of-7 from the field. Youngstown State made 38.3 percent of its field goal attempts, and was paced by sophomore Vytas Sulskis with 22 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Sulskis put a scare into Saint Francis by banking a 3-pointer off the glass with 26.2 seconds remaining to pull the Penguins within one point, 66-65. The final 26 ticks were furious. Ford missed the front end of a one-and-one with 23.8 seconds remaining, but Sweetney came down with the rebound and immediately got fouled. He also missed the front end of a one-and-one with 20.4 seconds left. Sirlester Martin missed a 3-pointer with 11 seconds remaining, and Kelvin Bright missed a 16-footer with four seconds left, as the ball rolled out of bounds with no time remaining. The officials looked at the replay to see if there should have been time left on the clock as the ball rolled over the out of bounds line. However, replays could not confirm time remaining on the clock to give the Red Flash a 66-65 win. Saint Francis fell behind very early as the Penguins held their biggest lead of the game,11-7, with 13:15 to go in the first half. Trailing 17-16 with 8:12 left in the first half, Sweetney nailed a 3-pointer to give the Red Flash the lead for good. SFU went on to build a 14 point lead in the first half, 38-24, with 1:45 remaining. Youngstown State (1-4) cut it to nine, 40-31, at the break. The Penguins chipped away the entire second half, but couldn’t overcome the deficit. Chiefs Loose To Cyclones Dec 01, 2008 The Johnstown Chiefs could not extend their four-game winning streak and fell to the Cincinnati Cyclones 6-3 on Saturday night. The Chiefs fell to 14-5-0, but remained in first place in the North Division. Cincinnati jumped on the board with two first period goals by Thomas Beauregard. He chipped in an even strength goal at 5:50, and added a power play goal at 8:07. Olivier Latendresse assisted on each of the goals. Jason Spence sent home his third goal of the season 11 seconds after Beauregard’s second to pull the Chiefs within one. After a point shot by David Schulz was turned aside by Kyle Gajewski, Spence dove to bat the rebound into the back of the net. Wes Clark won the face off back to Schulz to get his fourth assist of the season and first as a Chief. Trailing 2-1 the Chiefs looked for a better result in the second period, but Cincinnati scored the first two of the middle frame as well. Ben McLeod (6:54) and Ben Gordon (14:47) each scored their third of the season to make it 4-1 in favor of the visitors. Trevor Hendrikx whistled a wrist shot just inside the far post to halve the Cyclones’ lead at 15:46 of the second. It was Hendrikx’s first of the season with assists from Petr Pohl and Kyle Bushee. Pohl worked a great rush, with the newest Chief Andy Contois, which was started by Mike Bartlett and cashed in at 4:50 of the third to get the Chiefs back within one goal at 4-3. Ian Keserich came on to start the third in place of starter Kris Mayotte, but like Mayotte, wasn’t able to slow down Beauregard. He scored in close at 7:04 to complete the hat trick, and then added insurance with a slap shot goal at 13:05 Mayotte took the loss stopping 17 of 21 shots while Keserich made eight saves on 10 chances in relief. Johnstown’s power play was held without a goal, going 0-for-1. Pitt Prepares For UConn Dec 01, 2008 Pitt, ranked No. 23 in the AP and coaches polls (and 23rd in BCS ratings), concludes its regular season on the road against Big East foe Connecticut. Already bowl eligible with an 8-3 record, the Panthers look to bolster their postseason resume with a victory at UConn. The Panthers will try to snap a two-game losing skid against Connecticut. Pitt is also seeking its first victory at the Huskies' Rentschler Field, where it is winless in two prior visits (2004 and 2006). A victory at Connecticut would give Pitt a nine-win campaign for the first time since 2002, when the Panthers went 9-4, including an Insight Bowl victory over Oregon State. The game will feature two of the nation's top backs. UConn's Donald Brown leads the country in rushing (148.5 avg.), while Pitt's LeSean McCoy is No. 1 in scoring (10.9 ppg) and eighth in rushing (118.9). Penguins Win 2-1 Over Bruins Oct 21, 2008 Evgeni Malkin scored in the second extra round of the shootout to lift the Pittsburgh Penguins to a 2-1 win over Boston in the Bruins' home-opener. Phil Kessel scored on Boston's first shootout attempt before Petr Sykora tied it on the Penguins' second shot. Malkin beat goaltender Tim Thomas with a forehand shot inside the left post, and Pittsburgh goalie Dany Sabourin stopped Boston's Marc Savard's wrist shot, ending the contest. It was the Penguins' fourth overtime game in their seven overall this season. Kessel also scored a power-play goal in regulation for the Bruins. Miroslav Satan had the Penguins' score. The Penguins went ahead 1-0 when Satan scored on the rebound of Evgeni Malkin's shot 18:51 into the opening period. Boston tied it on Kessel's power-play goal 13:53 into the second. Goaltender Dany Sabourin had 35 saves and Thomas had 31. St. Francis Women Loose To Robert Morris Oct 20, 2008 Senior Keshia Gibbs (Dumfries, Va. / Forest Park) had 16 kills and just two errors on 25 swings for a .560 hitting percentage, but the Saint Francis women’s volleyball team couldn’t hold on to a 2-1 advantage in a heartbreaking 3-2 Northeast Conference-opening loss versus Robert Morris on Saturday night. Chief's Fall in Season Opener Oct 20, 2008 The Johnstown Chiefs started well in their home opener Saturday night, but ultimately fell by a score of 4-2 to the Wheeling Nailers. Mark McCutcheon opened the scoring for Johnstown on the power play, his first of the year, with a scorching one-timer that beat Wheeling goalie David Brown to the blocker side at 9:26 of the period. McCutcheon was set up inside the left-wing circle by a pass from Greg Gallagher, and Ray Macias earned the secondary assist. Johnstown ended the period up 1-0. Wheeling would draw even at 2:51 of the second period on a power play goal of their own off of the stick of Aaron Clarke with assists from Rob Sirianni and Tommy Goebel. Goebel put a goal of his own past Ian Keserich at 10:15 to give the Nailers a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Nick Johnson scored on the power play at 18:28 of the second to stretch the lead to 3-1 after 40 minutes. Johnstown ended the night 2-for-9 on the power play, while Keserich made 23 saves in taking the loss. The Chiefs take to the War Memorial ice again on Wednesday, October 22 against the Elmira Jackals. Saint Francis Falls To Monmouth Hawks Oct 20, 2008 Freshman Claire Wilkie (Durban, South Africa/Danville Park Girls) scored her second goal of the season, but it wasn't enough as the Saint Francis field hockey team fell to the Monmouth Hawks by a score of 3-1 on Saturday in West Long Branch. Wilkie gave the Red Flash the lead early in the game, scoring 3:19 into the contest. Her goal was unassisted. The Hawks battled back later in the half. Molly Passarella scored an unassisted goal of her own rebound at 20:08 to tie the game at 1-1 going into the locker room. She then scored again off a pass from Courtney Stetson just 5 minutes into the second half to put the Hawks up 2-1. The team will return home to host Quinnipiac University at DeGol Field on Friday October 24 at 7 P.M. BCS Standing Oct 20, 2008 Texas held first place in the first BCS standings Sunday, with Alabama second and Penn State not far behind the Crimson Tide. The Longhorns are way ahead of the field, as expected, and appear in position to play in the BCS national championship game Jan. 8 in Miami if they can stay unbeaten. Texas is an overwhelming No. 1 in the USA Today coaches' poll and the Harris Poll, and rated first in each of the six computer rankings, giving the Longhorns a BCS grade of .998 out of 1.000. The competition for second is much closer. Alabama is at .942 and Penn State is at .927. Oklahoma is fourth and Southern California fifth. The Pittsburgh quarterback grew up in Findlay, Ohio, with a large number of Cincinnati Bengals and Cleveland Browns fans, and most of his friends rooted for one of the two Ohio teams. Roethlisberger didn't cheer for either. He grew up liking the 49ers. He has especially disliked the sight of Bengals orange and black and Browns orange and brown since entering the NFL in 2004, going 5-0 in Cleveland and 5-0 in Cincinnati, counting one playoff game. In those 10 victories, Roethlisberger is 148 of 230 for 1,928 yards, 17 touchdowns and seven interceptions. The Steelers play Sunday at winless Cincinnati. Fans will be lined the fence when the team's plane touched down at Philadelphia International Airport at 7:40 a.m. Fans have waited 15 years to cheer like this. Cole Hamels, Jimmy Rollins and Brad Lidge led Philadelphia to a 5-1 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 5 of the National League Championship Series on Wednesday night to send the Phils to the World Series for the first time in 15 years. The Phillies will face either the Tampa Bay Rays or Boston Red Sox. Tampa Bay leads the ALCS 3-1. Fans poured into the streets across the city, honking horns and setting off fireworks after the game ended. Police made some arrests for disorderly conduct and other offenses, but there were no reports of serious problems. Chiefs Resign Sgroi Oct 15, 2008 The Johnstown Chiefs have re-signed forward Mike Sgroi. “We’re pleased to have Mike back for this season. He’s a proven physical presence on the ice who can also contribute offensively. It’s going to be great to have a fan favorite return that will undoubtedly provide energy and excitement,” said Chiefs Vice President and General Manager Bill Bredin. Sgroi, 30, was acquired on January 8, 2008 via a trade with Pensacola in a deal that sent rookie forward Mike Cohen to the Ice Pilots. Sgroi had an immediate impact as he picked up one goal and two assists for the Chiefs in his debut on January 12 against Reading. He would finish the regular season on a goal-scoring surge which saw him tally six times in three games, including a hat trick against Cincinnati on March 29. In all, Sgroi had 25 points (13G, 12A) and a team-high 192 penalty minutes in 27 games with Johnstown. The 6’5, 230-pound forward from Toronto, Ontario is currently recovering from a broken hand that he suffered while at training camp with the AHL’s Syracuse Crunch. The report, conducted by former federal prosecutor Lawrence Pedowitz, was issued Thursday. It called for the creation of a ``culture of compliance'' and the closer monitoring of games for suspicious activity. Commissioner David Stern chose Pedowitz's firm to conduct the investigation last year after former referee Donaghy was charged with betting on games he officiated and providing inside information to gambling associates to win their bets. He is currently serving a 15-month sentence. Sep 29, 2008 Steelers End With A Win Sep 29, 2008 The Pittsburgh Pirates ended yet another losing season with a win, beating the San Diego Padres 6-1 in a matchup of last-place clubs. Penn State Icers Annual Blue/White Game Set Sep 25, 2008 The 2008-2009 Penn State Icers will continue their annual tradition of kicking off their season with the Blue/White Game. The game will take place this Friday, September 26 at 9:15 PM at the Greenberg Ice Pavilion. The Icers will be split into two teams, the Blue Team and the White Team. They will battle each other during two 25-minute halves, with a 15-minute intermission between. The scrimmage will be a chance for fans to check out the new team and get a look into the upcoming season. Head Coach Scott Balboni believes this will be a good time for the players to work on certain aspects of the game. “We have many new faces this year and young guys that will be integral parts to our team so it is always exciting to see them in the blue and white jerseys for the first time,” said Balboni. “We are young and have a lot to work on, so this will be my first opportunity to see how we are progressing in a game-like atmosphere.” Before the game, the Icers will be on the ice to skate with family, friends and the community during a special “Skate with the Icers” session which will take place from 8:00-9:00 PM. The game will follow, and admission is free. Fans will also get to see the emergence of recently named team captains, including Frank Berry as captain, and Luke DeLorenzo, Kyle Mills and John Conte as assistant captains. Balboni believes they will serve as excellent leaders and guide their team to success. “With 13 seniors, we have great veteran leadership,” said Balboni. “I think the formal captains will do a great job and, as a testament to them, were chosen entirely by their peers.” The Icers will start their season on Friday, October 3 as they travel to Delaware for a weekend series and take on the Fightin’ Blue Hens. Friday’s game starts at 7:00pm and Saturday’s game will begin at 5:00pm. MLB, Union Agrees On Deals For Alvarez Sep 25, 2008 Pedro Alvarez has signed his four-year contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates. The third baseman inked the deal after Major League Baseball agreed with the players' association today that management can't unilaterally extend the August 15th deadline for draft picks to reach agreements with teams. Alvarez initially took a minor league deal that included a 6 million-dollar signing bonus after being the second player taken in the draft. The Brewers started September with a 5{-game lead in the wild card but squandered it with a 2-8 road trip that saw Dale Sveum replace Ned Yost as manager. Sabathia (10-2) retired 13 of his final 14 batters after giving up a two-out RBI single to Jason Michaels in the third. Penn State's freshman sensation in 2005 is now the steady captain in 2008 trying to help steer the Nittany Lions back into the BCS. He was part of a first-year class that helped coach Joe Paterno get the program back on track with a Big Ten title and an Orange Bowl victory. This year there are holes to fill at quarterback and linebacker, and injured Nittany Lions must return to add depth on the defensive line. The schedule-makers didn't do Penn State a favor with an October trifecta: at Wisconsin; Michigan at home; and at Big Ten favorite Ohio State. And away from the field, the team wants to rid itself of a string of legal and disciplinary issues over the past year that led to a handful of suspensions and dismissals. Pirates Take On Reds Aug 13, 2008 The Pirates host the Reds again tonight in a matchup of the two worst teams in the National League Central. The last-place Reds defeated the Pirates 5-1 Tuesday in their first game without slugger Adam Dunn. He was traded to NL West-leading Arizona on Monday for minor league pitcher Dallas Buck and two players to be named. Brandon Phillips and Javier Valentin sparked the Reds' offense, as each hit a home run to help Cincinnati snap a season-high six-game losing streak. If the Reds win tonight, it will be the first victory in back-to-back games for them in three weeks. The Reds' pitching has been the biggest reason for their slump. They have a league-worst 5.86 team ERA since July 24. Pittsburgh was 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position. With four straight wins, the Curve (51-59) have now matched their season-long winning streak. In addition, Altoona is now 12-5 over its last 17 games. Trenton (64-44), the first-place club in the E.L. North, has now lost a season-high six straight games. Ford's go-ahead RBI single in the eighth scored Jason Bowers from second base after Bowers had doubled earlier in the inning. Ford then scored the Curve's fourth run on newcomer Jim Negrych's RBI single to center. Negrych, who was called up from Class-A Lynchburg earlier in the day along with first baseman/outfielder Jamie Romak, went 2-for-4 in his first Double-A game after posting a Carolina League-leading .370 average with the Hillcats. Romak went 0-for-4 in his Curve debut. Mateo (6-1) continued to pad his win total on the season with three scoreless innings of relief. The right-hander has now earned victories in his last three appearances out of the Curve bullpen and his six wins lead all Altoona pitchers. Anthony Claggett (2-2), who entered Tuesday's appearances with a miniscule 1.02 ERA in 22 appearances out of the Trenton bullpen, was handed the loss. Dan Reichert made his third start for the Curve and received a no-decision after allowing two runs -- one earned -- over six innings. Reichert was staked to a 2-0 lead after Bowers and Melvin Dorta recorded RBI's during a two-run third, but the right-hander allowed a Thunder run in the fourth and then an unearned tally in the sixth before departing. The revamped Curve lineup, which included newcomers Negrych batting third and playing third base and Romak hitting fourth at first base, was missing regulars Luis Cruz and Jason Delaney, who were promoted to Triple-A Indianapolis earlier in the day as part of a massive roster shake-up around the Pirates' organization. The Curve will play the third game of their four-game series at Trenton Wednesday evening at 7:05 p.m. Altoona will send left-hander Kyle Bloom (2-5, 4.12) to the mound against Thunder righty Steven White, who will be making his first start with Trenton after being sent down from Triple-A Scranton earlier in the week. Fans can hear all the action on Real Oldies 93.5 FM and the Curve Radio Network starting at 6:50 p.m. Altoona will return to Blair County Ballpark Friday to open a six-game homestand against Bowie (Orioles) and Akron (Indians). Great seats remain for each game of the Aug. 1-6 homestand and can be purchased by calling (877) 99-CURVE, by visiting the BCB Ticket Office or by logging on to AltoonaCurve.com and clicking one of the "BUY TICKETS" links on the homepage. The Johnstown Recreation Pony champions scored 13 runs in the third and added 10 more in the fourth for a 23-5 mercy-rule shortened victory of North Allegheny. Ben Legath threw a complete-game, four-hitter. Ian Helsel went 3-for-4 with thre RBIs, while Jesse Copper and Zach Solarczyk each had three hits and drove in two runs. Justin Gdula had two hits, including a fourth-inning home run, and drove in three runs. The boilers will play Puerto Rico at 8pm Aguust 9th in Washington, Pa., in the first round of the World Series. Is is the second year the team has advanced to Washington. Curve Says Goodbye to Davidson Jul 29, 2008 Dave Davidson authored a fantastic farewell to his Altoona Curve teammates on Sunday in Harrisburg, tossing three scoreless innings of relief to earn the victory in the Curve's 11-inning win over the Senators. The left-hander was making his final appearance with Altoona before leaving the club to join Team Canada for its preparations for the upcoming 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China. Davidson left the Curve from Harrisburg Sunday evening to fly to Toronto for the start of Team Canada's pre-Olympic training camp on Monday. A native of St. Catherine's, Ontario, the 23-year old is one of 11 pitchers on the Canadian team's 24-man roster. “This is an amazing opportunity for me to represent my country in the Olympics and to be part of an experience which will stay with me the rest of my life,” said Davidson. “To wear your country’s jersey is a remarkable feeling. I’m looking forward to traveling to China and coming back home with an Olympic Medal.” A member of the Pittsburgh Pirates' 40-man roster, Davidson pitched in a team-high 34 games for the Curve, going 4-2 with a 3.29 ERA and 48 strikeouts in 63 innings of relief. He will likely re-join Altoona after the Olympics. Davidson is one of five current Eastern Leaguers who will play for Team Canada in Beijing, joining fellow pitchers T.J. Burton (Akron) and Brooks McNiven (Connecticut) and infielders Emmanuel Garcia (Binghamton) and Matt Rogelstad (Harrisburg). Davidson also becomes just the third active Curve player to participate in the Olympics. In 2004, infielders Yurendell deCaster (Netherlands) and Kevin Nicholson (Canada) played in the Olympic baseball tournament in Athens, Greece. Curve manager Tim Leiper, who coached third base for Canada's 2004 Olympic Team and the Canadian entry at the 2006 World Baseball Classic, is not a member of the 2008 Olympic coaching staff. Steelers Place 3 On PUP List Jul 28, 2008 The Steelers opened their 2008 training camp today and placed three players on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. The team announced this afternoon that nose tackle Casey Hampton (conditioning), safety Troy Polamalu (hamstring) and offensive guard Chris Kemoeatu (triceps) were all placed on the PUP list and will be ineligible to practice. No timetable was given for how long they will remain on the PUP list. The Steelers will hold their first practices of the 2008 season on Monday, July 28. The team’s afternoon practice, which begins at 2:55 p.m., is open to the public. Steelers Sign Sweed To 4-Year-Deal Jul 28, 2008 The Steelers announced they have signed their 2008 second-round draft pick, wide receiver Limas Sweed, to a four-year deal. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed. Sweed (6-4, 212), out of Texas, was the 53rd overall selection in the 2008 NFL Draft. He ranked sixth in Longhorns’ annals with 124 career receptions and finished fifth on the school’s career record list with 1,915 yards receiving. Sweed tied the Texas school record with 12 touchdown catches in 2006 and his 20 career receiving touchdowns rank second in Longhorns history. Prior to missing the second half of his senior season with a wrist injury, Sweed had 19 catches for 306 yards with three touchdowns. As a junior, Sweed earned All-Big Twelve first-team honors after posting 46 catches for 801 yards (17.4) with 12 touchdowns. The signing of Sweed means the Steelers have signed all seven of their 2008 NFL Draft picks in time for the opening of training camp. Curve Clip Aeros Wings Jul 24, 2008 The Curve continued their stretch of good baseball against the top team in the Eastern League’s Southern Division, doubling up the Akron Aeros, 6-3 on Wednesday night at BCB. With the victory the Curve secured themselves a winning homestand and a series win against Akron. Offensively the Curve pounded out six extra-base hits and got a solid outing from starter Luis Munoz. Munoz made just one mistake over seven innings. The right-hander allowed a three-run home run to Wes Hodges in the top of the fourth inning to give the Aeros a 3-0 lead. The Curve, though scored six unanswered runs. Altoona grabbed half the runs off Akron starter Ryan Edell. An RBI single by James Boone plated Steve Lerud for the Curve’s first run in the fifth inning to cut the deficit to 3-1. In the sixth, though, it was Lerud’s second home run of the season – a two-run shot – that tied the contest, 3-3. Off reliever Tony Sipp (0-3) the bottom of the eighth Curve scored three runs. Jason Bowers provided the go-ahead RBI double that scored Brad Corley to give Altoona a 4-3 edge. Corley finished the night 3-for-4 with three doubles and two runs scored. Lerud added an RBI ground out to extend the Curve lead to 5-3. Lerud had three RBI’s on Wednesday. Miguel Perez added the final run with an RBI double in the frame. Perez was 2-for-4. Juan Mateo (4-1) tossed a pair of scoreless innings of relief to earn the win. Mateo allowed just one hit. The Curve will look to take four out of five from the first-place team in the Eastern League’s Southern Division on Thursday afternoon at 12:05 p.m. Right-hander Dan Reichert (0-1, 6.75) will make his second start in a Curve uniform, while Akron righty Kevin Dixon (8-5, 4.05) will take the stump for the Aeros. Thursday at BCB will be Super Splash Day. The Curve will turn the ballpark into a water park. Bring your swimming trunks or bathing suit and have fun in the sun. If you don't want to get wet, don't worry -- there will be specially-designated "Dry Zones" throughout the ballpark. NOTES – The Curve are 5-3 on this current nine-game homestand, splitting a four-game set with Harrisburg and grabbing three out of four from Akron…The Curve pounded out six extra-base hits on Wednesday, two short of their season-high, which is eight....Brad Corley's three hits were all doubles, which ties him for a season-high for doubles in a game with Jonel Pacheco. Pacheco accomplished the feat on June 8 versus Connecticut... Angel Gonzalez extended his hitting streak to five games with a 3-for-4 performance. Gonzalez has recorded a hit in every game he has played in Double-A. Chief's Announce Changes Jul 24, 2008 The Johnstown Chiefs announced today changes to their 2008-09 schedule. The loss for the Curve (45-58) snapped a modest three-game winnings streak and prevented Altoona from winning four straight, which would have matched their season high in consecutive wins. Derek Hankins suffered the loss. The right-hander gave up an early three runs and could not recover. Hankins tossed 4 2/3 innings and allowed six hits and three runs. The only Curve run came in the bottom of the third inning by way of Jason Bowers RBI double that plated Angel Gonzalez. Bowers finished the night 2-for-4. Akron (63-40) scored a pair of runs in the second, one in the third. The Aeros also put one run across in the sixth, a pair in the seventh and a single run in the ninth. First baseman Matt Whitney finished the night 2-for-5 with a pair of RBI’s. A usually strong bullpen faltered on Tuesday. Each Curve reliever gave up at least one run. Pat Bresnehan (one run), Jeff Sues (two runs) and Chris Castorri (one run) all fell victim to the league’s best hitting team. The Curve will look to reignite on Wednesday night at 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Luis Munoz (1-4, 8. |
