Steelers Sign Mike HumpalJul 16, 2008The Steelers announced today the signing of 2008 draft pick, linebacker Mike Humpal. Financial terms of Humpal’s three-year contract were not released. Humpal (6-3, 240) was the Steelers sixth round choice (188th overall) in this year’s draft out of Iowa. In his final 24 games he posted 172 tackles (69 solos), 10 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, five pass deflections and six interceptions. Humpal was named team captain for the 2007 season and was an All-Big Ten Conference second-team choice by the media, adding honorable mention from the league’s coaches. Humpal was the first of two sixth round draft picks for the 2008 season (Ryan Mundy). He is the fifth of Pittsburgh’s seven draft choices to sign this year. Former Curve Player Plays In All-Star GameJul 16, 2008Former Altoona Curve outfielder and current Pittsburgh Pirate Nate McLouth became only the fourth former Curve player to play in the Major League Baseball All-Star Game Tuesday night during the 79th Midsummer Classic at Yankee Stadium in New York. More notably, of the previous three Curve alums to be selected to participate in the MLB All-Star Game -- pitchers Bronson Arroyo and Brendan Donnelly and shortstop Jack Wilson -- McLouth is the first to have been drafted by Pittsburgh, play for the Curve, and be selected to play in the Mid-Summer Classic as a member of the Pirates. Wilson played in Altoona in 2000 and was a Pirates' All-Star selection in 2004, but was originally drafted by St. Louis and traded to Pittsburgh in 2000. Arroyo, who was a member of the Curve's inaugural 1999 club, represented the Cincinnati Reds in the 2006 All-Star Game. Donnelly, who briefly appeared for Altoona in 1999, became the first-ever former Curve player to participate in an All-Star Game, when he was selected as a member of the Anaheim Angels in 2003. McLouth, in his year as the Pirates' everyday center fielder, has enjoyed a breakthrough 2008 season, hitting .281 with 33 doubles, three triples, 19 home runs, 65 RBI's and 11 stolen bases in 90 games for the Bucs. Originally drafted by Pittsburgh in the 25th round of the 2000 June Draft out of Whitehall High School in Michigan, McLouth arrived in Altoona in 2004 and starred on the only club in franchise history to reach the Eastern League Championship Series. The left-handed hitter primarily played right field for the 2004 Curve and hit .322 with 40 doubles, four triples, eight home runs, 73 RBI's and 31 stolen bases in a team-high 133 games. McLouth's 40 doubles and 166 hits established club records, which he continues to hold, while his .322 average and 93 runs scored rank second in the Curve's single-season record book. Interestingly, despite his terrific 2004 season with Altoona, McLouth was not selected to either the Eastern League's mid-season or post-season All-Star Team. Recently, he was one of 15 players honored with a spot on the Curve's ceremonial Tenth Anniversary Team. Steelers Sign 2 Draft PicksJul 15, 2008The Steelers announced today the signing of two of their draft picks for the 2008 season, quarterback Dennis Dixon and safety Ryan Mundy. Financial terms of both three-year contracts were not released. Dixon (6-3, 195) was the Steelers fifth round choice (156th overall) in this year’s draft out of Oregon, where he was named the Pac-10 Conference’s Offensive Player of the Year in 2007, while guiding the Ducks to an 8-1 record and a No. 2 seed in the BCS standing before suffering a season-ending knee injury. He tallied 6,337 yards in total offense while setting the school’s QB rushing career record of 1,208 yards. Dixon completed 444-of-695 passes for 38 touchdowns during his career. Mundy (6-1, 215) was the Steelers sixth round choice (194th overall) in this year’s draft out of West Virginia, where in 2007 he was the fourth-leading tackler for the Mountaineers with 62 tackles. He tied the team lead with three interceptions for 75 yards and also led the team in pass breakups with seven. Mundy spent his first four years as starting safety at the University of Michigan and then transferred to West Virginia as a post-graduate transfer. He finished his time at Michigan with 86 career tackles and three interceptions. Dixon and Mundy join Tony Hills and Bruce Davis as the four 2008 draft picks the Steelers have signed for the upcoming season. Spangler, Mertz, Glass and Marriott Win In Path Valley SprintsJul 14, 2008Todd Spangler started third, quickly took the lead, and sailed away for a decisive win in the full size PA 305 Sprints Friday night at the Path Valley Speedway Park. In other sprint car action, Rodney Glass, a former champion, returned to victory lane in the 600 Sprints; Tim Mertz came out of fifth place for the win in the Sidewinders, and Brian Marriott led every lap in the 270 Sprints. In local stock cars Leroy Long beat Ricky Harper and a strong field of cars to the win in Mini Stocks and Terry Smith came out of seventh place and used patience and persistence to win the Thunder Car feature. One final luck driver for the night was Levi Peck who won his heat race and then offered a marriage proposal to his girlfriend Ashley on the front stretch at half time. She said “yes.” Goshorn Racing Supply will sponsor next week’s races including special features with the Late Models and Legends cars taking the place of the Sidewinders and 305 Sprints. Rodney Glass has been a power at Path Valley for more than a decade. So given a chance to start on the pole in the 600 Sprint feature, he raced away with Kevin Steele and Tim Glatfelter in hot pursuit. Six cautions gave his pursuers chances to catch him but at the finish the front five were Glass, Steele, Glatfelter, Jake Murphy and Tom Kohler. Glass and Kohler won the heat races. On a lap two restart Todd Spangler took the 305 Sprints lead from “Cowboy’ Jim Kennedy and from lap seven on raced just ahead of Craig Laudermilch to the finish. The front five were Spangler, Laudermilch, Michael Wagner, Mike Freet and Kennedy and the heat winners were Mike Heckman and Spangler. Tim Mertz passed Rick Hench on a lap seven restart and raced to the Sidewinders win with a lead of half the track and more. The front five were Mertz, Ryan Greth, Stanley Fleming, Rohan Beasley and Denny Landvater and Mertz and Greth won the heats. Brian Marriott started on the pole and proved uncatchable in the 270 Sprints feature. He led by two turns as the race went with no cautions except for lap nine. At the pole the front five were Marriott, Sean McAndrews, Colby Dice, Jason Houtz, and Tom Tice and the heat winners were Tim McClelland and Levi Peck. Leroy Long finally passed Mike Hawbaker for the Mini Stock lead on lap nine and, as the race went without caution, held off a determined Ricky Harper to win by a turn. Long, Harper, Frank Gordon, Hawbaker and Gary Newell were the front five finishers and Newell and Long won the heat races. Terry Smith passed Mike Cordero for the Thunder Car lead on lap two after three restarts and then front lap six on stayed just ahead of Denny Scofield to the win. The front five were Smith, Scofield, Bill Kennedy, Randy Stull and Charles Kimmel and the heats went to Scofield and Smith. The Path Valley Speedway Park is located in Spring Run PA a mile north on PA Route 641 from the intersection with PA Route 75, halfway between Port Royal and Hagerstown. It is five miles east from the Willow Hill Exit 14 of the PA Turnpike. From March to October, Path Valley races stock cars and sprints Friday nights and AMA bikes or Strictly Stock junkyard cars Saturday nights. Curve Split Twinbill With SeaWolvesJul 14, 2008Jason Delaney and James Boone each knocked in a pair of runs and Corey Hamman tossed five strong innings in his return to the Curve starting rotation as Altoona defeated the Erie SeaWolves, 4-2, in the nightcap of a make-shift doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Jerry Uht Park in Erie. The SeaWolves outlasted Altoona, 12-11, in the day's earlier contest, which was suspended due to inclement weather on Saturday. Delaney drilled an opposite-field, two-run home run in the top of the fourth inning to start the Curve scoring in the nightcap. The longball extended Delaney's hitting streak to 15 games, which matches the fourth-longest stretch in team history and is the longest streak since Chris Duffy hit safely in 15 straight during the 2004 season. Boone increased the Curve's lead to 4-0 in the top of the fifth with a two-out, two-run double to right-center, which scored Miguel Perez and Melvin Dorta. Dorta singled ahead of Boone to extend his current hitting streak to nine games, during which he has 18 hits in 32 at-bats (.563). Hamman (5-6), who earlier in the day was sent down from Triple-A Indianapolis, scattered six hits and allowed only two runs over five innings to earn his fifth win in his last six decisions with Altoona. The left-hander held Erie off the board over the first four innings before allowing two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on a Ryan Roberson RBI double. Juan Mateo pitched the sixth and seventh innings to pick up his second save in as many appearances. In the earlier contest, which started Saturday and was completed on Sunday, Altoona lost an early four-run advantage, then nearly rallied from a five-run hole before dropping a 12-11 decision to the SeaWolves. Luis Munoz (1-3) took the loss in his first start for Altoona after being optioned from Pittsburgh, where he spent two days with the Pirates. The right-hander was tagged for seven runs and eight hits over 2 1/3 innings. Trailing 9-4 after six innings, the Curve began their valiant comeback attempt in the top of the sixth, when Brad Corley belted a solo home run -- his ninth of the season. Down 12-10 entering the ninth, Altoona loaded the bases with one out and cut the lead to one on a Jason Bowers RBI single. However, Erie right-hander Matt Rusch retired the next two batters to preserve a slim victory for the SeaWolves. Dorta, Corley, Steve Lerud and Luis Cruz each posted two-hit games in the game one loss. Altoona (40-54) can earn a series victory against Erie (39-57) with a win in Monday's series finale at Jerry Uht Park. The Curve will send left-hander Kyle Bloom (1-4, 4.57) to the mound for the 7:05 p.m. contest against righty Eddie Bonine, who was optioned by the Detroit Tigers over the weekend. Following Monday's game, the Curve will enjoy the two-day Eastern League All-Star Break. Boone's Blast Lifts Curve To 7-2 Win At TrentonJul 10, 2008James Boone belted a go-ahead, three-run home run in the top of the sixth inning to propel the Altoona Curve to a 7-2 win over the first-place Trenton Thunder Wednesday evening at Waterfront Park in Trenton. The victory evens the three-game set at one game apiece after the Thunder blanked Altoona, 8-0, in Tuesday's series opener. The Curve trailed 2-0 and had managed only one hit over the first five innings against Thunder left-hander Phil Coke, but Boone, batting with Steve Lerud and Jason Bowers on base, hit a towering blast over the left-field wall to give Altoona its first lead in the series. The longball was Boone's first home run since April 21. Bowers and Jonel Pacheco delivered key two-RBI singles as part of a four-run ninth to seal the win. Left-hander Kyle Bloom (1-4) shook off a two-run Thunder first inning and turned in his best effort of the season to earn his first win. Bloom, who was winless over his first 12 starts and 18 overall outings, worked a season-high 5 2/3 innings and allowed only two runs and four hits, while striking out seven. The two runs he gave up in the first were unearned. Meanwhile, the Curve bullpen, which has struggled in recent games, turned in a strong performance to nail down just the Curve's fifth win in 17 games. Ronald Belisario retired all four batters he faced between the sixth and seventh innings and Juan Mateo worked two scoreless innings to notch his first save. Coke (7-4) was handed the loss for Trenton, allowing three runs -- all on the Boone home run -- over six innings. Jason Delaney recorded a second-inning single to extend his current team-high hitting streak to 11 games. Delaney is just one game shy of matching Brad Corley's season-long, 12-game streak, which was turned in from April 22-May 5. The Curve will complete their three-game series against Trenton Thursday evening at Waterfront Park. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. Altoona will send right-hander Luis Munoz (1-2, 5.09) to the mound against Thunder righty Eric Hacker (4-1, 2.05). Fans can hear all the action on Real Oldies 93.5 FM and the Curve Radio Network beginning at 6:50 with the Curve GameDay Show presented by the Hotel Belmar and Budget Beverage. The game can also be heard live and for free on-line at AltoonaCurve.com. Malkin StayingJul 03, 2008Evgeni Malkin is staying in Pittsburgh for quite some time. The Penguins signed the MVP finalist to a five-year extension worth $43.5 million, a deal that will keep him under contract until the 2013-14 season. The 21-year-old forward still has one year left on his initial three-year, entry level contract. His deal is equal to one signed by teammate Sidney Crosby that begins with the upcoming season. Signing Malkin was key to the Penguins, who lost Marian Hossa to the Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings earlier in the day. Malkin could've become a free agent after next season if he didn't have a new deal. Malkin is arguably the team's best player besides Crosby. He scored 106 points, including 47 goals, last season and was an All-Star and a finalist for the Hart Trophy, which is given to the NHL's most valuable player. Nittany Lions Win Second Ever NCAA Championship May 05, 2008 Top-ranked Penn State won its first NCAA men's volleyball championship in 14 years, rallying for a 27-30, 33-31, 30-25, 30-23 victory over second-ranked Pepperdine on Saturday night.
"This replaces the 1972 Derry (Pa.) Little League championship for me," Nittany Lions coach Mark Pavlik said of his first NCAA title. "The strength this team had was singularity of purpose. They certainly played much better than I can coach.
"I think the standard has been set, certainly in our gym, and we're going to find a way to try to surpass that next year."
Matt Anderson had 29 kills for the Nittany Lions (30-1), who beat UCLA in 1994 for their last NCAA men's volleyball title. Anderson, the national co-player of the year, was selected the NCAA tournament's most valuable player.
"I'm awestruck with what just happened," Anderson said. "One of our attributes was our ability to fight in circumstances a lot of teams can't even deal with. We've faced deficits of eight, nine points and come back to win games."
Teammate Luke Murray added a career-high 12 digs, tied a season best with 63 assists and had nine block assists. Max Lipsitz had 17 kills, and Max Holt added 12 kills, nine block assists and two service aces.
Penn State also became the second school to win NCAA men's and women's titles in the same academic year. Stanford accomplished the feat in 1997.
Paul Carroll had 35 kills, eight digs and three aces for the Waves (17-11). J.D. Schleppenbach added 15 kills and four block assists, and Jonathan Winder passed for 60 assists.
Winder said that Penn State relied on its serving to make his teammates vulnerable to attacks at the middle of the net.
"Their serving was really good and it knocked us off the net," Winder said. "We didn't have success early and throughout the season, our middle blockers had to be good early."
The Nittany Lions lost the first game after taking a 15-7 lead, then saw Pepperdine rally from a 20-16 deficit for a 30-29 advantage in the second game. But with the score tied at 31, Ryan Sweitzer punched a kill and Anderson converted a tip for the win.
In the third game, Penn State used an 11-6 surge to take a 23-18 lead. Sweitzer had three kills and Holt added two in the run. The Nittany Lions took leads of 6-0 and 9-2 in the fourth game. Local Sports Scores 5/5 May 05, 2008 SATURDAY'S SCORES

Bud the Cat Now Has 8 Lives Apr 29, 2008 Bud the cat is back home safe and sound after spending more than four days stuck in a drain pipe in his family's yard in Harrisburg. Linda Grudi says Bud disappeared a week ago and the family searched high and low for him, nearly giving up hope. Then, on Saturday morning, as she was gardening, Grudi heard a faint 'meow.' Neighbors, a contractor, a plumber and the fire department resumed the search. Finally, Dave Jones of Roto-Rooter was summoned and he and his team dropped a fiber-optic camera about 100 feet into a 6-inch drain pipe and there was Bud, staring back at them. Some digging and sawing, and Bud was finally freed none the worse for wear, Grudi says, although a couple of pounds lighter after more than four days without food and water.
Smoking Ban Still Burning Apr 29, 2008 State legislators trying to negotiate a compromise bill banning indoor smoking say they do not have an agreement ready. As a result, they cancelled a committee meeting scheduled for Tuesday, and said they will keep talking. Sen. Stewart Greenleaf, R-Montgomery, said the delay should only be for a few days. The House and Senate have been stuck since July, when the Senate rejected a tougher ban approved by the House. Bills passed by both chambers last year would ban smoking in most public places and workplaces, including restaurants. But the Senate bill also allows exceptions for private clubs, bars, casinos and others, and stops Philadelphia and other local governments from enforcing a stronger ban.
Search Continues For Accused Killer Apr 29, 2008 A nationwide search for an accused killer. Johnstown police are trying to find 19–Year–Old Norris Collins. He is wanted for fatally shooting 27–Year–Old Cortez Jordan outside the Solomon homes Sunday morning. Neither Collin nor Jordan lived there. A motive is still under investigation. Witnesses say the two had been arguing before Collins pulled out a gun and began firing. Collins is also wanted on several felony warrants for drugs.
Scott May Get Second Chance Apr 29, 2008 Seven months after Joe Paterno kicked him off the Penn State Football Team, Austin Scott has a chance to make an NFL roster. The Cleveland Browns invite the former Nittany Lion to their tryout camp, which will take place in Cleveland Thursday through Sunday. If he makes a good impression over the weekend, Scott may find his way onto the Browns Roster and a spot in their training camp this summer. The browns only have 4 running backs on their roster, and drafted non this past weekend.

Chiefs End Season Apr 17, 2008 The Brabham Cup champions proved their mettle as the ECHL's top team Wednesday night, defeating the Chiefs 3-2 at the War Memorial and sweeping their best-of-7, North Division Semifinal.
Randy Rowe and Ryan Garlock netted goals for the Chiefs. Rowe scored late in the second period, while Garlock's was a power play goal with just over three minutes remaining in the game. It was only Johnstown's second tally on the power play all series. The Chiefs went 2-for-33 with the man-advantage throughout the four game set.
The Cyclones led 2-0 at the end of the first period. Thomas Beauregard gave Cincinnati a 3-0 lead just over five minutes into the second before Johnstown's comeback attempt.
Cincinnati had only 12 regular-season loses in regulation, and never lost more than two games in a row.
Johnstown finishes the season with a 36-30-6 record and a quarterfinal series sweep of Dayton. Scores Apr 16, 2008 ECHL Cincinnati 4, Johnstown 2 (Cyclones lead series 3-0)

The Penguins were eliminated in five games by Ottawa last year in the first round. They hope to sweep last year's Stanley Cup finalists out of the playoffs in front of their home crowd. Sidney Crosby, Evgeni Malkin, Marc-Andre Fleury and Ryan Whitney were among Pittsburgh's promising crop of playoff neophytes that last year's Senators took to school. The value of that experience isn't lost on them. But this year, Ottawa started the season 15-2, then barely hung on to make the playoffs.

Pens Apr 14, 2008 The Pittsburgh Penguins play the third game of their Eastern Conference playoff series with the Ottawa Senators tonight in Canada. And the Penguins are vowing no letup in the offense that gave them wins in Game 1 and 2. The Senators eliminated Pittsburgh in five games last year. But so far in this series, they haven't matched the Penguins' deep, multiple-line scoring. Evgeni Malkin has a goal and five assists, Sidney Crosby has four assists and Petr Sykora has three goals. Even 41-year-old Gary Roberts, who is playing on the fourth line, has two goals. The Senators, by contrast, are playing short-handed without injured captain Daniel Alfredsson, second-line center Mike Fisher and valuable forward Chris Kelly. And regular season team scoring leader Jason Spezza was kept out of weekend practice with a leg injury. Coach Bryan Murray may not know until today whether he can play.
Pirates Apr 14, 2008 The Pittsburgh Pirates powered their way past visiting Cincinnati 9-1. Ryan Doumit, Xavier Nady and Jason Bay homered to help the Bucs complete a three-game sweep of the Reds. Tom Gorzelanny bounced back from one of his worst career starts to outpitch Cincinnati rookie Johnny Cueto. Gorzelanny was coming off the shortest of his 47 career starts, a no-decision Monday when he allowed seven runs in two and a-third innings of the Pirates' home opener against the Cubs. He limited the Reds to one run and four hits despite walking four over six and a-third innings and is 1-and-1 on the year. After outstanding performances in his first two starts, during which he struck out 18 and didn't walk a batter, Cueto wasn't as sharp this time out. He gave up five runs and five hits in six innings. He struck out six but also issued his first walk. He also is 1-and-1 this season. Scores Apr 14, 2008 Eastern League Reading 7, Altoona 3

Zamboni to Lead the Chiefs Apr 02, 2008 Downtown drivers and pedestrians might be doing a double-take during Monday’s lunch hour. It’s not often, if ever, that a Zamboni cruises down Main Street. That will be the case Monday as the Cambria County War Memorial’s ice-resurfacing vehicle leads a parade through town to kick off the Johnstown Chiefs’ Kelly Cup playoff run. Last weekend, the fourth-place Chiefs clinched a playoff spot and home-ice advantage for a best-of-3 series against rival Dayton. Game 1 will be played Sunday at Dayton’s Nutter Center; Game 2 will be played April 9 at the War Memorial; and Game 3, if necessary, will be played April 10, also in Johnstown. The event will begin at 12:30 p.m. at Point Stadium. Police will front the procession, followed by the Zamboni and vehicles carrying the players. Chiefs mascot Tom E. Hawk also will be in the march, which will go down Main Street, turn right onto Franklin, make another right onto Vine and conclude at Napoleon Street. Tickets for the home playoff games went on sale Tuesday at the War Memorial box office.

Gridiron Bash Scrapped Apr 01, 2008 A New York producer's plan to lure a million people to 16 major college campuses with big-name acts on the eve of spring football scrimmages have been scrapped. Penn State was among the campuses planned for part of the ``Gridiron Bash,'' which was to start this week and bring in at least $15 million. Now questions are swirling about who's to blame. The producer, New York-based MSL Sports & Entertainment, faulted a late rules interpretation by the NCAA for forcing a postponementof the shows. The NCAA said its only concern over the event was theparticipation of players. It denied asking the company to stop the shows. MSL Sports, which announced the postponement of the shows over the weekend, said the shows wouldn't work without participation by the teams.

The Final Four Mar 31, 2008 For the first time in NCAA men's tournament history, four Number-1 seeds are meeting in next Saturday's Final Four. Kansas will play overall Number-1 seed North Carolina with UCLA and Memphis meeting in the other national semifinal at the Alamodome. Penguins Win Mar 31, 2008 Sidney Crosby set up goals by Marian Hossa and Evgeni Malkin as the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the visiting New York Rangers 3-1 Sunday. The Penguins, playing at close to full strength for the first time in weeks, moved into first place in the Eastern Conference with the win. Pittburgh's Marc-Andre Fleury played another excellent game in net, turning aside 26 shots. The Rangers missed an opportunity to move into fifth place in the conference. They controlled much of the play for the final two periods, but couldn't score in the final 56 minutes. Fleury has won his last seven games. The Penguins and Rangers face each other again tonight in New York.

College Baseball Game 1: UPJ 11, West Liberty State 0 Game 2: West Liberty State 9, UPJ 8 Chiefs Plan Special Guest of Honor Mar 28, 2008 A freshman at Westmont Hilltop High School made national news on ESPN this week for his work on the basketball court. This Saturday, the Johnstown Chiefs will welcome Danny Oberst as their Guest of Honor for their game against the Cincinnati Cyclones. Chiefs fans will also have an opportunity to meet Danny and get his autograph during a special post-game autograph session.
Oberst, a 16-year-old with Down syndrome, came off the bench in a ninth-grade game in early February between Westmont and Bishop Carroll, and scored a bucket in the Westmont win. Danny’s mother Patty, his coach Ron Flick, his teammates, and the Bishop Carroll team all worked to get Danny in the game, and he did not disappoint.
But it was Danny’s brother Mike, a Slippery Rock University grad student and an intern with the Chiefs, who gave the story the legs it would need to get to ESPN. Mike, Westmont Assistant Principal Tom Mitchell, and Danny’s teacher Heather Molnarko each wrote a letter to ESPN to suggest airing a feature on Danny. This was in late February, and Mike was a little skeptical about the results at first.
“I didn’t hear anything for a week or two, and I thought it would blow over,” Danny’s oldest brother said.
But it didn’t blow over and ESPN came calling. Pete McConville, a producer for ESPN’s ‘First Take’ called last Friday with the news that the program wanted to air Danny’s story. An interview with Danny and Mike Oberst, and Mitchell was taped in Pittsburgh last Tuesday morning and aired twice that afternoon. As would be expected, the story brought a ton of attention to Danny and his brother.
“My phone was off the hook on Tuesday, and I went to the bank yesterday and everyone was like, ‘Are you the brother,’” Mike said.
As for Danny, Mike said, “He hasn’t gotten any mail or anything like that yet, but we’re expecting it’ll start coming in over the next couple days, but everyone at school has been great. I don’t think he thought it would get this big.”
And even though Danny’s favorite sport is basketball, hockey isn’t very far behind, and Mike would know.
“We watch as many Penguins games together as we can, and with me working for the Chiefs he’s always telling me to get him good tickets,” Mike said.
As the Guest of Honor this Saturday, good seats won’t be something Danny has to worry about. In fact, he’ll get closer to the action than any other fan that night. Danny will come down to ice level and drop the ceremonial opening faceoff at center ice before taking in the action between the Chiefs and Cincinnati Cyclones.
The Chiefs beat Cincinnati on home ice last Friday in one of the most exciting victories of the season. Johnstown used a 1-0 shootout victory to cap a 4-3 win, and Ryan Nie tied a team record with his 25th win of the season. With the Cyclones looming as a potential second round opponent in the playoffs, the Chiefs will look to set the tone for that series with a great effort on Saturday.
That game will also feature the final Dodge Shootout of the season. You could be the lucky fan to come down to ice level, and shoot for a brand new Dodge vehicle!
Great seats are still available for Saturday’s game, and you can get yours by calling the War Memorial Box Office at 814-536-5156 or by going to www.johnstownchiefs.com.
Sid is Back! Mar 28, 2008 Jarkko Ruutu had a goal and two assists and the Pittsburgh Penguins beat the New York Islanders 3-1 in Sidney Crosby's first home game in more than two months. Crosby, who had suffered a high ankle sprain, took three shots but didn't score. Georges Laraque had a goal and an assist for Pittsburgh. Evgeni Malkin also scored as the Penguins won their sixth consecutive home game and seventh of nine overall. They lead the Atlantic Division by six points. Crosby Update Mar 24, 2008 Sidney Crosby has ruled himself out for Monday night's game against the New York Islanders after skating with his teammates in the morning. Crosby took the ice at Nassau Coliseum and stayed out well after the rest of the Penguins went off to the dressing room. He said his sprained right ankle feels better than it has in some time but that he isn't in game condition yet. Crosby's injured ankle has forced him to miss six straight games and 27 of 30. Although he wasn't ready to play Monday versus the also-ran Islanders, the Penguins captain wouldn't say if he would also sit out Tuesday at New Jersey in a key game against the Devils. Olympic Torch Mar 24, 2008 The Olympic Torch has been lit in Greece at the start of a circuitous, 85,000-mile journey to Beijing for the summer Olympics. This morning's lighting ceremony on a field at Ancient Olympia was marred by a small protest. Two men from the group Reporters Without Borders darted out carrying a black flag with the image of handcuffs forming the Olympic rings. They were quickly corralled by police. The Paris-based journalism advocacy group says three of its members were able to get into the ceremony without being stopped, even though more than 1,000 Greek police were there for security. China has vowed there will be strict security to protect the torch relay, particularly in light of all the protests over China's deadly crackdown on Tibet protests. Activists are upset over China's plans to take the torch through Tibet and even to the top of Mount Everest along the border between Tibet and Nepal. China is already barring mountaineers from the Tibetan side of the mountain.

Is Johnstown Making A Comeback? Mar 17, 2008 Decades after heavy industry died, the Rust Belt community of Johnstown appears to be regaining its footing. Downtown lofts are being snapped up and biotech companies and high-tech firms have set up shop. There are even quaint cafes and an upscale bridal shop among long-empty storefronts. An aggressive city planner, a creative redevelopment authority and tourism officials are trying to turn Johnstown into a postindustrial tourist center with a vibrant downtown. The city still has acres of decaying steel mills, shuttered factories and downtrodden neighborhoods, reminders of the bustling industrial hub that attracted immigrants and laborers. But there are signs that the valley community best known for deadly floods is making some headway.

Mining Accident Kills One in Indiana County Feb 26, 2008 A mining surveyor was killed by a shuttle car inside the Nolo mine in Buffington Township.
The accident happened inside the mine operated by the Amfire Mining Company in Indiana County.
Investigators are still looking into the death of a mine surveyor Tuesday afternoon. The employee was killed when he was hit by a shuttle car located inside the mine. State College Mayor Presides Over Commitment Ceremony Feb 26, 2008 The mayor of State College borough will preside over a same-sex commitment ceremony for gay couples in long-term relationships.
Mayor Bill Welch said he was asked to perform the ceremony by a Penn State group supporting gay, bisexual and transgender students.
"It's not illegal or immoral," Welch said. "I'm pro-commitment. I favor love and I didn't see any reason not to do it."
Welch, who has been mayor for 15 years, said he has received mostly positive feedback from the public.
"There have been about 50 supportive phone calls, e-mails, and letters, and two negative, including one anonymous lengthy phone message that suggested I face a hard road in the afterlife," he said.
The commitment ceremony kicks off Pride Week, and Welch encouraged people to reach out to others.
"I would urge them that if they don't know an openly gay man or woman, they ought to do so. They're folks like everybody else," Welch said.
The ceremony is scheduled to be held at the Hub-Robeson Center on Penn State's campus on March 29. Central City Catholic Churches Close Feb 26, 2008 The Altoona Johnstown Diocese announced on Monday that five churches in Johnstown's Cambria City will close.
Parishes affected are Saints Casimir and Emerich, Saint Columba, Immaculate Conception, Saint Rochus, and Saint Stephen.
The Catholic churches will become one parish, and use only one of the existing facilities.
Bishop Joseph V. Adamec, has announced that the merge is due to a declining population in the area as well as a lack of priests.
An engineering study will be conducted to determine which facility will be used.
The changes will not go into effect until June of 2009, and in the written statement, Adamec said the decision was not made lightly. In connection with the church closings, West End Catholic School will close at the end of the 2007-08 school year.
Several parishoners said they were very upset with the decision and plan to start a letter writing campaign to the Bishop in opposition of the decision. LOCAL SPORTS SCORES 2/26/08 Feb 26, 2008 MONDAY'S SCORES

Indians Reclaim Title Feb 11, 2008 The Conemaugh Twp. boys basketball team took home the WestPac championship Saturday afternoon with a 59-55 victory over Shade. The win avenged the Indians' two-point loss to the Panthers in October. Conemaugh Twp. has now won 17 straight games heading into the District 5 Playoffs. McCort Defeats Guilfoyle For Title Feb 11, 2008 Bishop McCort (24-1) defeated Bishop Guilfoyle (22-3) for the third time this season, 47-39 to win the Laurel Highlands conference championship Saturday night at the War Memorial. Marissa Basile finished with 16 points and Brittany Genday scored 14 to pace the Lady Crushers. Coaches Resign Feb 11, 2008 The Ferndale School Board accepted the resignations of the girls' varsity basketball coach and her assistant during a packed board meeting Thursday night.
Coach Mae Altman and assistant Sara Priest said they were forced to resign after an R rated move was shown to the high school team on the way to a Penn State game.
Several of the coaches' supporters called the situation a witch hunt and asked that they be reinstated.
Ferndale's Athletic Director Glenn Wagner had also resigned, but it's not clear if it was related to the movie incident. 2/8 LOCAL SPORTS SCORES Feb 08, 2008 THURSDAY'S SCORES

Football Players Arrested Feb 07, 2008 Three West Virginia football players have been charged with felony possession of marijuana with the intent to deliver. Running back Ed Collington, a junior from Pittsburgh; linebacker John Holmes, a junior from Rockledge, Florida; and defensive lineman James Ingram, a sophomore from Cleveland Heights, Ohio, were arrested Tuesday night. Police reports indicate the three were acting suspiciously as they left an apartment complex and were later pulled over for speeding. After smelling a strong odor of marijuana, deputies searched the vehicle and found individually wrapped bags of marijuana. After Ingram allegedly told one of the deputies there were also drugs at his apartment, investigators found more marijuana and bags used to package the drug in a bedroom. WVU head coach Bill Stewart says he will take appropriate action once all the facts are in.

For the Giants, Eli Manning was 21-of-40 for 254 yards, no touchdowns and no interceptions. Manning's main target was Plaxico Burress, who recorded 154 receiving yards.
The Giants got on the board first when Lawrence Tynes connected on a 29-yard field goal with just under five minutes left to play in the first quarter.
New York extended its lead to 6-0 early in the second quarter with another field goal by Tynes, this one from 37 yards.
The Packers then answered right back with a big play from Donald Driver, who connected with Favre for a 90-yard touchdown reception to take a 7-6 lead. It marked the longest play in Green Bay's postseason history.
Green Bay extended its lead to 10-6 when Mason Crosby connected on a 36-yard field goal late in the second quarter.
The Giants struck back in the third quarter with a touchdown after Brandon Jacobs scored on a 1-yard run to take a 13-10 advantage. But New York's lead didn't last long as Donald Lee caught a 12-yard pass from Favre to put the Packers back in front 17-13.
New York jumped back into the lead late in the third when Ahmad Bradshaw scored on a 4-yard run to put the Giants ahead 20-17. The Packers tied the game at 20-20 with a field goal early in the fourth quarter.
The Giants had a chance to win the game at the end of regulation, but there was a high snap on the field-goal attempt that threw off Tynes' timing and caused the kick to go wide.
The Packers won the coin toss to start the extra session, but their possession was quickly ended when Favre's passing attempt was picked off. The turnover set up another field-goal attempt for the Giants. That time Tynes was good on the attempt, nailing a 47-yard kick to win the game 23-20.
AFC Championship: New England 21, San Diego 12 The New England Patriots stayed perfect, even if their quarterback wasn't.
The Patriots improved to 18-0 on the season with a 21-12 victory over the San Diego Chargers in Sunday's AFC championship game.
The Patriots will face the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLII on Feb. 3, when they will try to become the first team since the 1972 Miami Dolphins to finish an entire NFL season undefeated.
New England quarterback Tom Brady struggled in Sunday's victory, throwing three interceptions in the outing, including one in the red zone. The passer -- who was named the league's Most Valuable Player this season -- also added 209 yards and two touchdowns.
His counterpart, San Diego quarterback Philip Rivers, was 19-of-37 for 211 yards, no touchdowns and two interceptions.
Rivers started Sunday's game despite suffering a sprained knee against the Indianapolis Colts in the divisional playoffs last weekend. Running back LaDainian Tomlinson (hyperextended left knee) saw limited action Sunday, as did Antonio Gates (dislocated toe).
San Diego got the first big break of the game with an early interception after Brady was picked off by Quentin Jammer with a little more than five minutes remaining in the first quarter.
The Chargers took advantage of the turnover and jumped out to a 3-0 lead when kicker Nate Kaeding connected on a 26-yard field goal attempt.
But New England didn't stay scoreless for long. The Patriots opened the second quarter with a touchdown when Laurence Maroney ran for the 1-yard score to put New England ahead 7-3. The TD marked Brady's 14th consecutive playoff game with a touchdown pass, second in NFL history only to Green Bay's Brett Favre.
San Diego cut the deficit to 7-6 when Kaeding connected on another field goal, this one from 23 yards out.
The Chargers turned the ball over on their next possession when New England's Asante Samuel picked off Rivers' pass that was intended for receiver Chris Chambers. The Patriots' offense took advantage of the turnover, scoring a touchdown when Brady connected with Jabar Gaffney on a 12-yard pass for a 14-6 lead.
San Diego trimmed New England's lead to 14-9 at the half when Kaeding connected on a 40-yard field goal attempt late in the second quarter.
The Chargers made the game even closer early in the third quarter when Kaeding was good on a 24-yard field goal attempt to bring San Diego to within 14-12.
The Patriots threatened to score with less than four minutes remaining in the third quarter, but facing third-and-goal, Brady threw his third interception of the game to end the drive and give the ball back to San Diego.
But New England got its offense back on track in the beginning of the fourth quarter, as Brady connected with Wes Welker on a 6-yard pass for a touchdown and a two-score lead at 21-12. FORMER STEELER DIES IN CRASH Jan 21, 2008 A Pittsburgh Steelers legend and original member of the Steel Curtain died in a car crash near Lumberton, Texas, Thursday night.
Ernie Holmes, 59, who lived in the small community of Wiergate as an ordained minister, was most famous for his years with the Pittsburgh Steelers from 1972 to 1977. Holmes played as a defensive lineman.
Officials told KBTV that Holmes was driving southbound on Highway 69 near Colonial Drive in Hardin County, when his car left the roadway and rolled over several times.
Holmes was ejected and pronounced dead on at the scene. The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
Holmes won two Super Bowl rings with the Steelers, in Super Bowl IX and Super Bowl X. He recorded 39 1/2 sacks during his career with the Steelers.
Holmes, nicknamed "Fats," was also famous for shaving his head in the shape of an arrow early in his career.
He was released after the 1977 season.
In a written statement, Steelers Chairman Dan Rooney said:
"We are deeply saddened to learn of the sudden and untimely death of Ernie Holmes. Ernie was one of the toughest players to ever wear a Steelers uniform. He was a key member of our famous Steel Curtain defense, and many people who played against him considered Ernie almost impossible to block. At his best, he was an intimidating player who even the toughest of opponents did not want to play against. Ernie seemed to be doing well in recent years and was always one of our most popular players whenever he returned to Pittsburgh for team events. Our prayers go out to Ernie's family and loved ones. He will be missed by the entire Steelers family." LOCAL SPORTS SCORES Jan 18, 2008 FRIDAY'S SCORES

Both the Bishop McCort and North Star football teams made school history in 2007, and both saw their seasons come to a heartbreaking end Friday night in the PIAA state quarterfinals.
McCort lost to Wilmington for the second straight year in this round, falling 35-24 in a Class AA quarterfinal at Mansion Park in Altoona. The Crimson Crushers jumped out to a 17-0 lead in the second quarter on a Matt Varga interception return for a touchdown. They led 17-7 at halftime, but the Greyhounds rushing attack (led by Pitt recruit Chris Burns) proved to be too much in the second half.
The Cougars loss was even more frustrating. North Star entered the game as decided underdogs against the top-ranked Class A team in the state, undefeated and WPIAL champ Serra Catholic.
Serra had not allowed an offensive touchdown in five games, but the Cougars were not phased, taking just six minutes to score on an 81-yard touchdown pass from Cory Kaltenbaugh to Luke Zellem. North Star would score two more touchdowns in the first half to take a 22-14 lead into the locker room.
Another score in the third quarter pushed the Cougars lead to 28-14 entering the fourth, but a Serra Catholic interception return for a touchdown on the first play of the final stanza turned the momentum for good. The Eagles tied the game later in the quarter and another interception deep in North Star territory with less than four minutes left set up Serra for the winning score, as the Eagles held on to beat North Star 34-28 at Cougar Mountain Stadium in Herminie.
McCort finished their season 12-2. The 12 wins was a school record. North Star closed out the season with a 10-3 record, winning the first |
