Centre County’s Economic Growth

In Centre County, there’s a new push to develop an industrial sector that is already recognized as being a national center for that type of business.

Now, it’s projected to be a factor in the county’s future economic development.

It’s labeled a priority in Centre County’s Chamber of Business and Industry’s new blueprint for the county’s economic growth.

“We are potentially the densest concentration of sensors, ultrasound and chromatography business in the United States,”

Sensors, ultrasound, and chromatography are technologies used in our everyday lives with applications across a broad spectrum, including medicine, transportation, agriculture and other fields.

Some companies here are spinning off startups from work done at Penn State.

Now, the hope is to keep more University graduates in Centre County.

We have a knowledge base. We have a significant high number of qualified students graduating from Penn State every year that could be employed every year right here in State College and Centre County,”

To grow the workforce, an application is being submitted for a multi million dollar Federal grant for sensor industry companies.

“We want to expand and grow and ideally keep them here in Centre County,”

Sensor innovation in Centre County is also seen as helping to diversify the region’s economic base, making it less reliant on education and healthcare.
