After many years of repair delays, the Funicular at the Horseshoe Curve in Blair County is finally ready to ferry visitors to the landmark’s upper observation deck.
It was taken out of service in 2020 because of several mechanical issues that needed to be addressed, thus preventing some visitors from being able to enjoy the views of the passing trains, and surrounding valley.
The Funicular was installed as part of a massive upgrade effort over 30 years ago.
The Curve is a national historic landmark that is known around the world as a pinnacle of railroad engineering.
The entire curve was built by hand, in the 1850’s, as a way to help trains traverse the steep Allegheny Front.
“When it was out of service, it was a challenging time for all of us. We understand the frustrations and we shared those frustrations. So, to be able to open this back up – it’s just a very big positive, and I look at is as a start of a new beginning here at the curve,”
It officially reopens to the public this weekend and will be open on weekends for the rest of the year.
There are some holiday plans being worked on, so visitors should keep checking the Horseshoe Curve website for updates.
