More now on the controversial plans to possibly close several State Prison facilities, as a cost cutting move.
Thats what we heard Tuesday when we asked the Centre County Commissioners, who are on the record opposing the possible closing of the Rockview State Prison and the Quehanna Boot Camp, what they’re hearing from the public.
“We’re receiving a number of heartfelt letters from the inmates at Rockview.talking about how valuable the various speciality programs are for the inmates.its my understanding its a couple of inmates who are energizing this. They’re paying for the paper and the stamps out of their own pocket”
The State claims Rockview needs work, and to refurbish the facility would cost $74 million dollars. Its located on more than 5000 acres of State Land between State College and Bellefonte
“There’s a tremendous amount of land out there. It located on the most desirable developmentable corridor remaining in our area. There’s tremendous economic opportunity.but there’s also tremendous interest in the environmental aspect of this. The preservation of farm land”
The Department of Corrections says some of that property is needed for the operation of SCI Benner, which is located next to the Rockview Prison.
